The conflict between Martin Luther King and the FBI reveals new sides of both, in one of this year’s most talked-about American films.

For years, the FBI ran a dirty campaign against the civil rights activist Martin Luther King, whose life ended in an assassination at the age of 39. For the FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover, King was a communist and troublemaker who had to be stopped at all costs. But what do you do when the FBI’s many hours of illegal surveillance show the less likeable sides of the iconic politician? Even though ‘MLK/FBI’ is shot in stylish and elegant black and white, it includes the finer nuances of the complicated conflict from a dark period of US history, which (sadly) is reminiscent of today, when the legacy and spirit of King is as relevant as never before.
