The victim of a poison gas attack meets a member of the Japanese cult behind the attack in a quietly shattering film about extremism and understanding.

On 20 March 1995, the Japanese doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo attacked the Tokyo metro with nerve gas. 13 people died, and several thousand were injured. One of the survivors was Atsushi Sakahara, who in his debut film visits one of the sect’s high-ranking members (who was not involved in the attack) to understand the extremist group’s thinking. They come from the same region and went to the same university. Now they are travelling through Japan together on a journey where Sakahara, with almost superhuman forgiveness and patience, tries to reach into the apathetic Araki, who has turned his back on the world and his family in favour of the next life. Can radically different worldviews separate us so much that we can never meet in the middle?
